Yes, I cut all the IDE features back out of hd.c with small size as a goal.
I think you would seriously have to consider giving drivers/block/xd.c
the axe first. It probably makes sense to drop both xd.c & hd.c in 2.5.x
along with a bunch of other stone-age stuff (like 1x & 2x non-IDE CD-ROMs ?)

As of 2.3.47 ide didn't work on old MFM/st506 stuff. (2.3.48 and up just
cold reboot right after "Uncompressing kernel..." message on my sx16)
