Linux-2.3.99-pre* IDE?

I've got my cute and well-hacked I-Opener loaded with linux, and bought a
Linksys USB100TX USB Ethernet adapter to get it on the network. A friend
of mine has the same setup (sans the IDE HD internally, he's netbooting
from flash) and is using 2.3.99-pre3, and it's working
beautifully. However, with IDE support added, the machine locks on boot
after the Loading Linux.............. part.

Is IDE still broken? Or would it be something else that's kicking it out?

I'd really rather boot from the local HD, as it won't always be net
connected, and especially not on the same network.
