What if one has more than one kernel of one version installed (eg.
2.2.14 with framebuffer and 2.2.14 w/o fb)? Then you've got the choice
between
1) recompiling the *whole* kernel after changing the version statements
   at top of the main Makefile --or--
2) Analysing /proc/cmdline at start-up.

(2) seems to be *much* faster IMHO esp. if you've not got such a modern
number cruncher with >500MHz...
