>=pre5 OOPS on boot failure to open /dev/console

I am getting an oops on boot. This is on pre5 all the way to pre6-3.

I have traced the code all the way to kernel main.c when trying to open
/dev/console (swapper thread has just been activated and init is about to
be incarnated).
Culprit code seems to be the namei_open() being invoked from filp_open()
I have devfs turned off.
It seems to be an exception violation; oops message reads:

"unable to handle paging request at virtual address 0x656c6f95
*pde=0000..
"
Any takers?

cheers,
jamal
