There can always be a userspace abstraction program. But that would need to
track the kernel like Richard tracked it with devfs for over 100 releases -
which would suck.

Maybe a file like System.map, distrubited with the kernel, that contains
mappings? Would still need to be maintained, but being in the main tree,
chances are larger that it will.
