I sent the following message to the mailing list in February concerning
the development kernel. Unfortunately, I attempted to used kernel
2.3.99pre3 and got the same results as before. I hope this information
helps. Please e-mail me directly if I can offer any additional
information.

Thanks,

Jeff

Subject: freeing unused kernel memory and the development kernel

Hello,

I have been using linux for several years but I am not a developer or even
a programmer. As such, I have opted not to subscribe to this list but I
do feel that I should contribute by reporting this bug(?). Please CC me
with any questions, details or suggestions.

Kernel: 2.3.40 and 2.3.47 (I have not tried any other development
kernels but 2.2.14 works fine for
me. I waited so long to report this
because I figured that someone more
                                   knowledgeable than myself would report
                                   the problem somewhere between 2.3.40
                                   and 2.3.47 but apparently not.)

Problem: the kernel seems to hang after:
"Freeing unused kernel memory: 168k freed"
                (kernel 2.2.14 reports:
"Freeing unused kernel memory: 56K freed"
and continues gracefully. By hang I mean that the system
does not continue any further. I've let it sit for
nearly 10 minutes. I do not receive a kernel
panic, OOPS or any other type of error message.)

System: RedHat 6.0 with many upgraded packages.

Compiler: gcc version egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2
                 release)

Memory: 64 MB 72 pin EDO

CPU: AMD-K6 200 w/ multimedia extensions stepping 01
                 (AMD K6 Steeping B detectecd but I believe that I have a
                 revision after B9730xxxx)

Motherboard: Supermicro P5STE w/ intel HX chipset (bios revision 1.7)

"sh ./ver_linux" from a working 2.2.14 kernel yields the following:
                 Kernel modules 2.1.121
                 Gnu C egcs-2.91.66
                 Binutils 2.9.1.0.24
                 Linux C LIbrary 2.1.3
Dynamic Linker ldd (GNU libc) 2.1.3
                 Procps 2.0.2
                 Mount 2.9o
                 Net-tools 1.52
                 Console-tools 1999.03.02
                 Sh-utils 1.16
                 Modules Loaded (not really relevant)
obviously could not run this test witht he 2.3.47 kernel.

Please let me know if any other information would be useful but please
don't assume that I know how to collect that information :)

Again, please CC me in response to this posting.

Thanks,

Jeff Miller
