sym/ncr drivers in 2.3.99-pre3 use the Dynamic Dma Mapping (since pre1),
but the drivers in 2.3.47-51 use virt_to_bus() instead.

IIRC, 2.3.4X kernels were involved in the support of the Dynamic Dma
mapping. This let me suggest to look for the cause of the problem in that
feature addition.

If 2.3.46 worked for you both (Btw, it is _important_ to know the latest
kernel that worked for bug tracking), then 2.3.47 diffs should be
inspected, in my opinion.

PS: I cannot reasonnably help for Alpha problems (even if it happened in
    the past that I have been fortunate looking into the source) for the
    reason I donnot have access to such hardware.
