Strange interactive SMP problems

I am trying to put a cheap SMP system at home and have strange problems
when using SMP kernels.

I must admit that my setup is rather odd:
Intel BX mb (Alton) with P3/450 and P2/400.

The problems are present both in 2.2.14, 2.3.46 and 2.3.47.
The same system works normally with UP kernels.

Basically, with SMP enabled, the interactive response under X and KDE
becomes nonexistent. For example, sometimes it feels like the keyboard
input becomes stuck to one process - netscape, emacs, gimp, etc.- and
any attempt to type anything in an open xterm fails, though the focus
seems to be shifting - the xterm window highlights. Sometimes it seems
that there is no response to keyboard at all, but <CTRL>-<ALT>-<F1>
works. Sometimes applications stop to respond to the mouse clicks.
Sometimes this problems go away after a couple of minutes, sometimes I
have to kill the offending application to get my keyboard back.

The problem seems to get worse the more interactive activity I produce.
I have no problems running non-interactive programs (like compilers). I
see no errors in logs.

I would appreciate any hints on what's going wrong, and willing to do
any amount of testing. I am not subscribed to this list, so please cc:
