scsi problem - to many drives???

I have a computer with 7 scsi drives attached to it.
When the driver is loaded, I can see all 7 drives.
sda, sdb, ..., sdf.
Just a bit later the partition checked is happening and only
The first 5 drives are visible ( sda to sde )

I canīt access either sdg or sdf. The device files are there, so the
problem is somewhere else. If I do "fdisk /dev/sdf" I just get

Unable to open /dev/sdf

The kernel is 2.2.14. This is happening on 2 totally different computers.
I havenīt found anything in the documentation, related to maximum of
allowed drives or so...

Anyone an idea??? Help!!!
