Sure. ifconfig shows you _your_ mac address. He want to find the
mac address of the other NIC using the same IP address.

Actually. Thinking again, the easiest way would be to unplug
his box from the net, then go to another computer, ping his own
IP address. If there is a reply, then run arp. He now has the
mac address of the guilty NIC.
