poor performance suddenly after ip masquerading

Hello I just connected a win98 computer to my linux 6.0 box which has
connection to the internet with a ethernet card. After I reconfigured and
compiled the kernel (2.2.9), I succefully made ip masquerading work.
However, the connecting speed of my linux box became considerable lower
than before. It will take long time to look up host (5~10s) and sometimes
I had to try again to get connection like telnet or ftp. But the pinging
speed to my gateway and first DNS server is still fast (<10ms).
I'm a newbie. I read most relative howto's and still got no idea. Any
grateful pointer:
Is it a problem caused by ip masquerading or configuration of kernel?
How to solve it?
Thanks
Kaixuan
