rhosts question

folks,

i am trying to do an rdist from a solaris (2.5.1) system to a redhat
(5.2) machine.
i keep getting the following error msg:

pam_rhosts_auth[1947]: denied to root@sharewave.hq.sharewave.com as
root: access not allowed

here is a listing of my /.rhosts file (on the target machine):

1 -rw------- 1 root root 111 Jun 3 13:03 /.rhosts

and the relevant lines from the file: (host and domain name hav been
changed
to protect the innocent):

foohost root
foohost.my.domain

i have tried editing the config files in /etc/pam.d to no avail. if we
bypass the
pam_rhosts_auth check, the rdist still fails, which makes me think there
is
something wrong with the rhosts setup, but i am unable to find it so
far.
any help would be appreciated.

tia,

//daryl
