[1.] One line summary of the problem:
All of the 2.2.0-pre kernels that I have tried (pre[6-8]) have a
serious NFS bug that causes writes to hang in some circumstances.
[2.] Full description of the problem/report:
At my home I have a 10baseT network, connected via cable modem to the
internet, then through several routers to work. Using 2.0.36 (and
previous), I regularly mount NFS servers at work and read/write files
with no difficulty. However, with 2.2.0-pre8 I am unable to read or
write files to those servers.
However, the same machine can access servers on the local subnet at my
house with no trouble. It can also access the servers at work if I
carry the machine to work and plug it into the local subnet there.
The specific symptoms are that the server mounts with no difficulty,
and will let me interrogate it using "df", but as soon as I try to
read from or write to a file on the server, the process doing so locks
up and can not be killed. Once it is in this state, subsequent
attempts to run "df" also hang and can't be killed, and unmounting the
file system fails.
I've tried two servers at my work: one running HP-UX 10.10, the other
running Linux 2.0.33. Both behave identically.
One possible complication, which I mention only because I don't
understand its effect, is that my home subnet is connected to the
cable modem through an address-translating router. The router is not
a Linux box with masquerading, but a dedicated piece of hardware (a
Cayman Systems 2E500). Unfortunately, I'm not able to remove the
router to see what happens.
FYI, here is the output of traceroute. "cph-router" is the
address-translating router mentioned above.
