I think you mean rs.internic.net :) But I'm missing something here;
doing a 'dig' to a specific server will bypass your named, and thus
it wouldn't be doing any caching at all, not having even received the
request. It seems to me that the ideal thing to do would be just "dig"
with no arguments, which will ask for .'s NS records through the
appropriate nameserver listed in resolv.conf, which can then update
its cache if need be.
