255.255.255.129 netmask?

Greetings,

I'm not a net-newbie--I've been familiar with TCP/IP for some years now,
but this is not something I've had to deal with until now.

I recently got cable Internet access and my provider says my subnet mask
needs to be 255.255.255.129. Being a security-conscious kind of guy, I
set up a Debian 2.0 box to be my "firewall", but I can't

ifconfig eth0 netmask 255.255.255.129

I get

SIOCSIFNETMASK: Invalid argument

This is with

net-tools 1.45
ifconfig 1.33 (1998-03-02)

A netmask of 255.255.255.0 seems to work fine. I know that
255.255.255.129 can be a valid (though unusual) netmask, but what should
I set eth0 for? And if I can't set it for 255.255.255.129, what
problems might I expect?
