nis makefile ends in error (help!)

Hi
I am trying to install NIS on a Red Hat 5.1 machine and when I run
/usr/lib/yp/ypinit -m it gives me an error like:
*** No rule to make target `Makefile', needed by `passwd.byname'. stop
and then it ends. I don't know what this means or how to fix it.
