It was the darn cable!

I was having 100% carrier errors with my netcard.
What disoriented me is the fact that when booted with windows the same
system would use TCP/IP without a single error on the same wire (that
i've been using for years). So I couldn't believe there could be a real
hardware error on the line.
I changed the cable and...
everything is perfect now

Now why linux would be so sensible to a marginally dysfunctional net
cable (10base2) and win98/NT not, this remains a mystery to me. Maybe
the windoze routines don't really check the line condition? Obviously
the tolerances are not the same. (but I thought this was a business for
the netcard, not for the OS...)

Conclusion: never trust a wire tested with windoze :-)

I whish to thank all the people who helped me with this, in particular
Thomas and James. It was fundamental in the troubleshooting process. I
also learned a lot...
