it's a factory-soldered 10base-2 on the BNC port, with a terminator at each
end... been using it for years without problems...I'll try another, but I don't
think the problem comes form there.

carrier errors? which?

the very same hardware under NT in one box and w95 in the other end runs TCP/IP
without any problem. :(

What I cannot understand is the failure of the TCP/IP stack to pick up what is
going on in the wire, as if they were disconnected...

What other troubleshooting step could I take (short of trying another
distribution)?
