You've got it backwards. Sendmail has historicly been one of the most
unbelieveably difficult, buggy, and hard to learn programs out there.
Of all of the available MTA's smail is just about the easiest, and if
it had continued to be maintained, and wasn't so bug riddled at this point,
it would probably be much preferred by most simple mail setups.

According to it's authors, exim is a replacement for smail, with the
intention of being just as simple, but far more powerful and secure.

Qmail is another story. It's still easier to learn, easier to
configure, more reliable then sendmail. It's faster then sendmail,
and you do a lot of your configuration by calling programs using shell
syntax.

To me (and many others) sendmail is no longer an option.
