You don't need do register every host (www.xxx,ftp.xxx etc) - in fact you even can't.
You've got to register the domain (foo.com) and can put whatever you want behind (in fact infront) of it. All you need is a nameserver which will resolve the aaa (from aaa.foo.com) into the IP. you do need an ip-address for every system which should be directly reachable from the net. One System can have more than one name.
I don't know if there are still free IPs in your area ... here in germany they're "sold out" ... that's very cool :( ... now i've got this 622mbit-connection but NO IP :(
