I've never enabled it on a pile of NE2Ks and cheap clones, and on other
even more demented 8390 based hardware (apple mac daynaport II) and not
had any problems.

That doesn't even mean they are a good clone. The certification isnt an
NE2000 compatibility tests its a "works with own driver solidly" test.
