My suggestion is to run Squid for the proxy software and run your linux
box as a gateway machine, you can do this by IP masquerading, this is
suggested if you only have one IP, if you run IP masq you will need to
keep open a few ports although IP masq has built in IRC support, and
telnet SHOULD work as well.
