New to networking

I am in the process of setting up a new Linux install with networking.
I am using Linux 2.0.27 and have tcp/ip, ipx, ppp, etc installed on the box.
The local stuff seems to be working ( linux finds my ethernet card at the
proper address and irq). However I can't seem to get my Win 95 box to see
the linux box (or the other way either). I have read and reread the
HOWTOs , but they leave a lot to be desired in the way of actual details
on how to set up a network. Can anyone point me toward a better source of
info? Please?
Linux setup:
Pentium, Linux 2.0.27
ethernet NE2000 compatible
Oh yeah, the two boxes talk just fine if both are running Win 95.
