ppp CHAP authentication error

Hello there,
I encountered problem using the ppp CHAP authentication feature on
Linux 2.0.28 using ppp version 2.2 on the client side.
The pppd exited with error
"pppd: peer authentication required but no authentication files accessible"

I have correctly setup the /etc/ppp/chap-secrets file.
Without the CHAP option to pppd it runs successfully establishing ppp
connection to remote via the modem.

Any idea what the error means?
