usermod

I often see references to the utility usermod (which can modify users after adding them by hand or with adduser) -- but I can not find this util anywhere. I have Slackware and its not on any disk set.

I read in the a Linux Book (by Que Publishers) that you should use usermod instead of editing /etc/paswd because of some odd reason I cannot remember now.

Anyone using usermod or do all do vi etc/passwd ?
