Probably not the best place to ask, try linux-admin (if it exists). This
mailing list is for networking issues on linux (like, getting network
cards to work, playing with IP:tNG, getting linux to talk the same
networking protocols as Win NT, etc) Anyway...

Single user mode doesn't help, as you'll still need roots password to log
on.

Use a slackware/redhat/whatever boot/root disk combo to boot the machine,
then mount your linux partion (mount -t ext2 /dev/hdsomething /mnt) and
edit /mnt/etc/passwd.

man 5 passwd will be helpful ;)
