A few people have pointed out that recent 2.1.x code has much of this
done...

My apologies - I have been so fixed on getting a solid 2.0.x based product
that I have only followed 2.1.x by reading the mailing lists... and didn't
see anything on masq/NAT (other than it broke with ipv6 :-) ).
