Yes - thanks! - that was one of the umpteen variations tried.
(I have been trying all SUnday :-()

I should add that the time I did this to get the data for the posting
was one of the few occasions on which slattach "worked" on oboe.
I have not been able to get slattach to do it again since.
What happens is that I launch slattach - old version - and it
goes into the background OK but then an ifconfig sl0 five seconds later
fails witha "no such device" and various TSIOCTL (or whatever) errors.
The slattach just hangs in the background. In contrast, the new
netttools slattach detaches from the terminal OK but dies about 30s
later and
meanwhile and afterwards ifconfig gives the same error as with the old.

SIOCSIFADDR: No such device

Nothing appears in the syslog or messages file except occasionally the
following (syslog):

Nov 24 22:19:50 oboe last message repeated 3 times
Nov 24 22:20:57 oboe kernel: ERROR 'sl0' busy and not MOD_IN_USE.

Do I take it that you have slattach working? Can you send me details of
the exact procedure you use, and the versions of slattach, kernel and
libc you are using :-)?
