DIP with kernel 2.1.9 ?

Am I supposed to upgrade the DIP package after upgrading the kernel to
2.1.9, or is there something special to be done, such as manually
configuring the serial port or what else ?
I was able to use dip with 2.0.6 (version is this:
DIP: Dialup IP Protocol Driver version 3.3.7o-uri (8 Feb 96)
Written by Fred N. van Kempen, MicroWalt Corporation.
) but now with 2.1.9 I have to shutdown and reboot with the old
kernel.
The script just stops in the middle...
