route: netmask doesn't match route address

Hi all. I am running RedHat 4.0 with all the latest i386 updates.

My problem is seemingly very fundamental. ifconfig shows that eth0 and lo
exist, and are configured correctly, but doing something as simple as
'route add -net 127.0.0.0' fail with 'SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable'.
I am successful in adding the eth0 device example from the manpage, that
is, 'route add -net 192.56.76.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev eth0', but using
my fake IP address that I have used before, 'route add -net 192.107.200.0
netmask 255.255.255.0 dev eth0' gives me 'route: netmask doesn't match
route address'.

What could be the problem? What changed with route that could cause this
effect? I have had this configured this way in the past with no problem..
Thanks for any ideas,
Dave Wreski
