Problem setting-up network--pls help

I'm new in linux and need help to setup my network on linux.

For your info I'm using slackware 3.0 and kernel 1.3.68. I had installed
the n disk and to work with 3com card (3c5x9). When I try to restart
it I got this message during system up

During setup I got this message
SIOCSIFADDR: no such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: no such device
SIOCSIFBRADDR: no such device
SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable

I had disable the loopback but when I type ifconfig I only get local
loopback msg not the eth0

I really hope that someone can help me
