output from 'last'

the length of the third column (name/address of originating machine) was
(I guess) poorly designed. In case of IP addr instead of name the output
has truncated last digit:

mamama ttyp5 123.123.123.12 Fri Jan 26 19:28 - 19:53 (00:25)

Is there anything anybody can do about it ? Where does 'last' come from ?
Is the length 14 standartized somewhere ?

Are there pgms out there that rely on the size of this field being 14 ?
(it *should* be 15 :-( )

Jan
