Yes, that would help out, and sounds necessary. It also means that
creating a new network device name "type" would not be needed at all,
right?

Why would you want to do this? Just for a new flag you wish to export?
Just add it to the existing module.
What do the network driver developers think about the new device name?
Is there a reason you have not Cc:ed them on this patch and brought this
name change to their attention?
