"SIOCADDRT: network unreachable", but ifconfig shows eth0 set up correctly

Hi,
I've tried to install the latest Sorcerer-distr. of Linux, but can't get
the network to work. I compile linux-2.4.18 as I did with Mandrake and
SuSE (version around 7-8), where it always worked.
My network-card is a RTL8139 pcmcia-card in a laptop, and the 8139too
driver works normally well if compiled into the kernel.
With Sorcerer, the kernel boots normally, ifconfig sets up eth0 correctly,
but when I try set the route table, I get a "SIOCADDRT: network
unreachable" notification.
I compiled and use pcmcia-cs with all systems.

Does anyone know, where the problem is, or is this due to the different
setup-scripts (I didn't find anything obvious).
