What does your PHY layer look like? Is this a coaxial bus or are dave and
ramboy dual nic'd?

>From what you describe, this sounds like a physical problem. If you are running
coax, is everything terminated properly? What if you swap the connections
between dave and hal? Are you certain of those ip addresses?

Just a few thoughts off the top of my head.
