pnp dhcp for built in network cards ?

how can i have pcmcia like pnp dhcp with built in network cards ?

all dhcp clients i could find to this at boot:
wait until a dhcp server is found and has answered or
timout/retry and give up.

what i would like is:
go into background, wait for the network hardware to detect a
link, and the look for a dhcp server. never give up, retry several
times, and restart everytime the link status changes from off to on.

situation:
notebook, build-in network card. no network cable attached at boot time
(so please donīt wait for something), but network cable will be attached
and deattached sometimes later. the link led goes on and off when
doing this, so the hardware does recognised something is done. i guess
the kernel sees this too. what iīm missing is a dhcp client, that waits
for the link, and will ask for dhcp ip address everytime the links
goes from off to on (or at least if the link was away for some minutes).

currently i donīt start pump at boot time, because most of the time
there is no network cable, so it will hang and timeout for no good
reason. after attaching a cable i need to su to root, and start
pump myself.

any help ?

andreas
