I've got a strange problem going on that I could use some help on. Here's the
setup:
I've got a adsl connection using a ne2k-pci card. My ISP uses PPOE, so I'm
utilising Roaring Penguin's client software. In this setup, the ethernet
interface is brought up, but no ip address is assigned.
The problem:
On several occasions, the ppp client has died and is automatically restarted.
But for some reason the network card does not respond, or more correctly, only
partially responds. The ppp link is established, but I get no trafic across the
link. The only way I can fix this is to kill the ppp link, down the interface,
and to unload/reload the ne2k-pci module. Then when everything is brought back
up, it works as expected.
I've gone as far as to substitute different net cards of differing manufacture,
but the problem persists. It's not quite as bad since I've placed traffic
limits on my web server, but it still happens at random times.
Does anyone have a clue as to what is going on? I'm open to suggestions of
things to try. If I can't find a way to fix this, I'm going to have to work out
a script to periodically reset the card as I have been doing manually.
