X over network

I've had reports of Xpps running from a remote server being slow over the
network to a Linux box. This doesn't happen on Windows boxes running the
commercial Exceed X server or on NCD X terminals, all connected via the
same type of network to the same server(s). It seems to only be some
applications (emacs is one), and mainly affects mouse events.

Occasionally when 'a lot of heavy clicking' is going on there seems to be
a lag of maybe 1/2 second or so, which is enough to irritate users.

The NIC card is a realtek RTL8139 with the latest release of the driver.

Any thoughts? Are there any parameters that can be tuned in X to
prioritize X mouse events?
