how do I specify multiple possible drivers for eth0?

I want to make a bootable disk image supports networking and will
automatically pick the correct device driver at boot time. It appears that I
can put multiple entries in /etc/conf.modules i.e.

alias eth0 tulip
alias eth0 eepro100

and kerneld/modprobe will try them until it finds one
that works. Or at least it appears to work in the few tests
that have been tried. Is this just accidental or is it something
that I can depend on? Is there a better way to do this that requires
no human intervention?

                                Thanks,

P.S. For now I only care about 2.2.* kernels.
