for SiS cards, two ways:
- getting the XFree 3.3.6 WITH docs

- editing the /etc/X11/XF86config file and adding:
-- in the device section, "no_accel", "no_linear", "no_bitblt",
"sw_cursor", "videoram 4096". several configurations of the options
sould be tested to see which option (or which set) resolves the problem.
-- in the screen section, display subsection, the option
"DefaultColorDepth 8" may help (it is the default if no_linear set).

also you should check if the text is displayed well on text mode
console. I had a trouble with mode 80x50, the lines were collapsing each
other. here pass the option vga=normal to the prompt.
