Late 505 models have Rockwell HCF modem instead of normal modem that was
in N505TX (my N505VX has one with device id 2005 -- I haven't seen that
one before, but it looks just like one with 1005, and as much
unsupported), so there are only three ways those boxes will see a phone
line from Linux -- through PCMCIA modem (but then the only slot will be
used) through external modem (but to use a serial port one has to attach a
huge brick-like "port replicator" -- I haven't found any serial cable with
Sony's Centronics-like 68-pin plug that connects to "I/O" jack), or USB
modem (I don't know if it even will work, but again -- with single USB
jack there won't be a place for external mouse unless you will attach
another brick for USB hub).
Another problem is APM and CardBus -- after resume CardBus device
can't send interrupts, and no manipulation with drivers, re-insertion,
BIOS, etc. can make them work again -- one has to reboot to see CardBus
again.
Other problems are solvable -- USB patch to 2.2.13-2.2.14 works
(except for a floppy), Opensound driver works (but has to be unloaded
before suspending the box and loaded again after resume -- simple
apmd_proxy script can take care of that), NeoMagic video chipset is
supported in X, cdrom is supported in late versions of pcmcia-cs.
I have seen Z505?? having problems with USB mosue, however I haven't
tried to fix that yet, it may be some simple problem with PCI
configuration and drivers.
