The quest for a stable kernel

I have been following this list for a few weeks, and now I must
install a new Linux box to replace my current machine, who has been
running for about a year with kernel 1.2.13 (Yes! I am stuck in time!).
The main question now is: as 2.0.21 is waiting for me round the corner,
can I trust him? Is any of the earlier releases more stable?
By the way, it's a Compaq box, with NCR 53c810 SCSI and AMD Lance PCI
ethernet, and I'm using Slackware 3.1 (please spare me from the
distributions war).

Thanks a lot,
